World Water Day is when people celebrate this blessing of nature we call “Water”. Water is food, water is health, water is life… Access to Water is the most important challenge Human Kind has had to face and will have to face. Today, 2.1 billion people live without safe drinking water at home; affecting their health, education and livelihoods. Damaged ecosystems affect the quantity and quality of water available for human consumption. Sustainable Development Goal 6 commits the world to ensuring that everyone has access to safe water by 2030, and includes targets on protecting the natural environment and reducing pollution.

There are plenty of statistics that predict an increasingly water-scarce future. Yet most companies consider climate change mitigation a higher priority. According to BSR’s 2017 survey of sustainability leaders at 151 of the largest multinational companies, climate change (along with human rights) is the number-one sustainability priority for companies. Water availability/quality came in fourth. Only 42 percent of respondents from a recent survey conducted by Ecolab and GreenBiz Group cited water management as a strategic corporate initiative.

Better Water Management: An Overlooked Climate Change Strategy

Water is foundational to our survival, and everything around us. As an old saying states: 3 minutes without air, 3 days without water, and 30 days without food we will all perish. Take them seriously. Everywhere in the world, more and more people struggle to get access to clean water; in some regions, it has become an utmost urgency. In our fight against climate change, we are missing a key weapon: better water management.

Energy and Water management is at the core of our hydropower industry. Hydropower is one of the few technologies that is truly multi-purpose. Hydropower solutions not only provide enough energy to support a sustainable and modern lifestyle for everyone, they mitigate water challenges, contribute to control water flows and water storage. As an industry, we can contribute significantly to achieving most of the UN Sustainable Development Goals for Clean Water. Everywhere in the world, we are proud to support our customers in providing sustainable energy and clean water.

Happy World Water Day

World Water Day, on 22 March every year, is about focusing attention on the importance of water. Water savings come from more efficient water application methods, like irrigation measurement at the crop or drain water re-use. In the industrial space, our clients are increasingly confronted by the cost of water supply security and the cost of full compliance with regulatory pressures. In the municipal arena, officials are called to be stewards of our shared financial and environmental resources, providing water and sanitation services in the most efficient ways that maximize sustainability and resource recovery.

Nature is the answer for managing our precious freshwater. Nature-based solutions to water management support a circular economy that is restorative & regenerative by design.

Agriculture, which accounts for 70 percent of water abstractions worldwide, plays a major role in water pollution. Farms discharge large quantities of agrochemicals, organic matter, drug residues, sediments and saline drainage into water bodies. The resultant water pollution poses demonstrated risks to aquatic ecosystems, human health and productive activities.

On World Water Day, it’s a great time to start thinking more broadly about how our water management practices can make a significant contribution to protecting our planet. That’s a change that would benefit all of us. Let us all embrace water conservation. We are all water practitioners and we can face this challenge together.
